As we close in on the October 2nd deadline to nominate for a 2020 Rockstar Award, we are so honored to highlight winners from last year, including Jose Che-Che-Turrubiartez! Jose won the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award for Health Equity, which is a partner organization that specifically awards youth advocates working towards health equity.
But…what is health equity?
In a report designed to increase consensus around meaning of health equity, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) provides the following definition: โHealth equity means that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. This requires removing obstacles to health such as poverty, discrimination, and their consequences, including powerlessness and lack of access to good jobs with fair pay, quality education and housing, safe environments, and health care.โ

From their nomination
This individual throughout his career has advocated for comprehensive sexual health for people for all, especially those who are affected most by HIV African American MSM and Latinx MSM folk who do not speak English. He has participated in the National HIV Testing campaign โDoing Itโ in both languages and has continued to advocate for sexual health services for young people. This past year he was able to bring much-needed sexual health services to the University of San Diego which is a Catholic University that doesnโt fully offer its students sexual health and reproductive health information. I canโt think of a better individual to receive this award.
If you know someone working towards health equity, nominate them today!
