Thriving, Not Just Surviving

Written By: Madeline Zielinski & Azieb Abraha

There is a struggle for people to be able to survive in our current society and its systems, much less thrive. In this blog we will be highlighting a young musician who is not only surviving, but thriving through her efforts to create healing and uplifting music.

Azieb Music is a former member of Youth MOVE Indiana and a musician from the Chicago area. She describes her music as “chill wave, or whatever the cool kids say nowadays lol” and has been making music for more than 10 years, stating that “it’s (music) pretty much who I am.”

You only have to listen to Azieb’s music to know this is true. There is a sense of honesty and vulnerability in the music that can only come from the heart. There have been a few people that describe her music as therapy, as well.

“When I play piano it makes me feel like time and space disappear. A mentor of mine told me to “never let go of the things that bring you peace.” I feel like music calls me in a way many other things don’t, so it’s a staple in my life and healing… It’s helped me significantly after Sidney Fenix, my late soulmate, passed away. Music gives me a way to channel my emotions.”

She says to anyone wanting to harness their own creativity: “Believe in yourself, we all have great potential. Stop comparing yourself to others. No one can do you better than you!”

And to those struggling with grief: “Be patient with yourself and forgive yourself, if i didnt i would drive myself crazy thinking about ‘why did this happen’, and ‘what could I have done?’”

“I’d love to eventually give back the knowledge I’ve learned and provide a safe platform of expression for others.”
