Our Leadership Academy gives youth and young adults the skills needed to make change in their communities and the systems that serve them.
What is Youth Advocate Leadership Academy (YALA)?
Youth Advocate Leadership Academy (YALA) exemplifies how YMN supports youth leadership development and organizations incorporating youth leadership efforts and opportunities.
YALA is a two-and-a-half-day immersive leadership experience for young people ages 14–29 who have lived experience with mental health, foster care, juvenile justice, or other youth-serving systems. Whether you’ve already developed self-efficacy skills or are just beginning to recognize your strengths, YALA meets you where you are—and helps you grow.
But this isn’t just a training. YALA is rooted in “nothing about us, without us”, a framework built on the belief that youth are equal partners in solving the challenges they face. Particularly system-involved youth who often lack the platform and support to make change. Rather than being talked about, youth in YALA are empowered to lead the conversation, design solutions, and step into their roles as advocates and changemakers.
Socio-Emotional Learning
The Youth Advocate Leadership Academy embodies YMN’s commitment to fostering youth leadership and empowering organizations to integrate youth leadership into their efforts. This 18-hour training program is designed to cultivate a peer-led environment where participants can build on their existing leadership skills and work toward their future aspirations within the youth movement. YALA includes access to YMN’s comprehensive leadership curriculum, which features online live training sessions, self-paced learning modules, and peer group consultations. The program blends experiential learning with peer-facilitated group discussions and activities, allowing participants to apply key leadership concepts and encouraging organizations to adopt a youth-led approach similar to YMN’s own model.
Impact of YALA
Too often, adults dominate the conversation around youth issues—offering solutions that don’t resonate, ignoring youth insight, or unintentionally creating harm. This dynamic leaves youth feeling disempowered and unheard. YALA flips the script. It creates a space where youth are not only listened to—they’re leading the work.
Participants leave YALA with real skills they can use in school, work, and advocacy. In fact, 94% of past participants report gaining leadership skills they can apply immediately, and many go on to lead efforts in their communities. By connecting personal growth with systemic change, YALA helps youth move from surviving to thriving—both as individuals and as movement builders.
Over the last two years, YALA has trained 102 individuals, demonstrating its effectiveness in nurturing and advancing youth leadership. By providing a collective learning experience that combines practical exercises with peer interaction, YALA equips both youth and organizations with the tools needed to foster a more inclusive and youth-driven leadership culture. This training not only enhances individual leadership capabilities but also supports organizations in developing a more youth-centered approach, thereby amplifying the impact of youth advocacy and leadership across various platforms.
