Mental Health, Stigma, & the Latinx Comunidad - The LatinXpert

Questions for Reflection

  • What messages did you receive around the concept of “mental health” in your family?
  • How has the culture you grew up in informed your understanding of “mental health” and “mental health struggles” or emotional distress?
  • Are there community-based supports in your area specifically serving Latinx youth? Are there multiple?

Activity

Dive deep into your local history! Consult family members, people in your life, and internet resources to learn about the major historical events and social conditions for your community over the last 50-100 years, and reflect on the following questions:

  • What major historical events informed your community?
  • How historical trauma (i.e. systemic racism and colonization) impacted your community?
  • What messages around “mental health” and emotional distress exist in your community? How might these be informed by that history?
