“Now more than ever, youth and young adults are being exposed to numerous influences that focus on defining “ideal” standards for body weight, shape, and size. These “beauty” standards in the United States and western societies are often not only unattainable and unrealistic, but they also don’t accurately reflect the lived realities or self-determined preferences that youth themselves experience. Even so, through long-term manipulation and socialization to these standards, largely by businesses and other capitalist interests, youth and young adults often strive to attain them. All too often, this endeavor leads to the development of harmful relationships with food and eating, and with our bodies, which may or may not result in diagnosed eating disorders…”
